A new collaboration between Parajumpers, creative collective
Bluemoonthecrew and Joackim Guichard, a big-wave surfer, fisherman,
and construction worker
For Joackim, big wave surfing isn’t just a hobby. It’s a way of life; a need that suffuses every part of his existence. The tang of saltwater in his nose, the wind running through his hair, the board in his hands. Above him, sky; below, only ocean.
Born in Norway but raised on the rocky coasts of Portugal, Joackim began surfing at 13 – and never stopped. Working as both fisherman and construction worker to fund his passion, his life is a devotional to the water, a prayer to the waves. This intimate connection with nature forms the basis of this collaboration between Joackim, creative collective Bluemoonthecrew and Parajumpers.
Following Joackim as he goes about his daily life on the islands of Madeira, a story emerges; a narrative of dedication, resolve and exploration – as well as a lot of fun. The clothes required for this lifestyle need to be both durable and breathable: light, easy to layer and quick to dry.
For time spent chasing the waves, swim shorts like our garment-washed Mitch are a must. Here, Joackim pairs them with a cotton Shispare T-shirt, the soft, slouchy Charlie Easy fleece and a Fisherman bucket hat. These are relaxed, unselfconscious clothes, ideal for messing around in the swelling surf, on the wide golden sands.
For his job as a fisherman, he chooses the Rescue Uniform Nigel jacket and Walton shorts – made from ultra-light peached poplin, they’re garment washed for a laidback, old-school effect.
And for time spent unwinding on the boat after a hard day’s work, he picks soft knits like our cotton-bamboo Braw sweater and fleecy Osage pants.
On the construction site, he wears pieces from the Smash series. Made from a comfortable and agile recycled cotton-nylon mix, they’re finished with a water-repellent treatment for unexpected showers.
Hours spent driving in Joackim’s van on the narrow mountain roads call for airy layers: micro-ottoman Sigmund shorts, stretch ripstop Oswald jacket and jersey Patch Tee.
He’s preparing for scouting and exploring, depending only on himself – long days spent hiking the ruggedly beautiful Madeiran wilderness. He prioritises pieces that give him the freedom to move, such as the high-tech Bistro jacket, crafted from a flexible 2.5-layer fabric and finished with a water protective coating, as well as the stretch twill Chip shorts. To carry much-needed supplies he brings Hubbard, a sturdy, multi-pocket backpack with padded straps.
The culmination of Joackim’s adventure is an overnight stay in the woods. Only the rustlings of animals and the crackle of the campfire remain – he is at one with the forest around him. For this experience, he chooses a padded gilet like Zavier, or a hybrid jacket like Hiram, for an element of extra warmth. These are combined with pants such as Zander, in soft pima cotton, or the military-inspired Sheldon, and topped off with a soft, snuggly beanie.
In harmony with his surroundings, Joackim is a beacon of positivity, passion and determination. For him, adventure isn’t just a facet of life; it’s the entire purpose.
